‘Painfully funny. The pain and the funniness somehow add up to something entirely good, entirely noble and entirely loveable.' - Stephen Fry

Winner of a record THREE National Book Awards: Non-Fiction Book of the Year, New Writer of the Year and Zoe Ball Book Club Book of the Year

Welcome to the life of a junior doctor: 97-hour weeks, life and death decisions, a constant tsunami of bodily fluids, and the hospital parking meter earns more than you.

Scribbled in secret after endless days, sleepless nights and missed weekends, Adam Kay's This is Going to Hurt provides a no-holds-barred account of his time on the NHS front line. Hilarious, horrifying and heartbreaking, this diary is everything you wanted to know – and more than a few things you didn't – about life on and off the hospital ward.

Sunday Times Number One Bestseller and Humour Book of the Year

This edition includes extra diary entries and a new afterword by the author.

To be honest I am also an ex doctor so recognise many of the stories but never have I laughed so much reading a book. A must read for anyone in the NHS, connected to the NHS or those who just don’t get what it’s like. Thank you for making this human

This is a fantastic, funny, heartbreaking and honest account of what it really is like behind A&E. If you have ever used/visited or been treated by the NHS this is is a must-read. This will completely change how you view the NHS. It is fantastically written, it’s witty and at times disgusting. I couldn’t put it down! This should be a boon to be a mandatory read for everyone - it will change the way you see the NHS forever.
  • Great Book

So funny and so sad no other book has told it just how it is and the state of the NHS and how hard junior doctors have it. I now feel guilty for moaning about being kept waiting hours for my clinic appointments at Leeds General Infirmary.
